Derek & Joan Burney
Derek and Joan Burney share a deep belief in the transformative power of postsecondary education and a strong connection to Northwestern Ontario. Both from what is now the City of Thunder Bay—Derek from Fort William and Joan from Port Arthur—they have dedicated their lives to public service, education, and supporting their community.
Derek Burney is a distinguished diplomat and political strategist who helped shape Canada’s international trade policies, including paving the way for the North American Free Trade Agreement. He has served as Canada’s ambassador to the United States, chief of staff to Prime Minister Brian Mulroney, and Chancellor of Lakehead University. He has also held leadership roles in the private sector and was recognized as an Officer of the Order of Canada for his service to the country.
Together, Derek and Joan have raised four sons and continue to support initiatives that provide opportunities for young Canadians, particularly through postsecondary education, strengthening communities in Northwestern Ontario and beyond.

Since 2003, Derek and Joan Burney have been steadfast supporters of Confederation College, providing awards to students from any program based on academic achievement and financial need. Their generosity has helped countless young Canadians access postsecondary education, empowering them to build skills, pursue careers, and contribute to their communities.
